DUI driver hits woman in Provo crosswalk gifPROVO, Utah - A 66-year-old man has been arrested for driving under the influence after he was caught on video speeding through the crosswalk at the Sam's Club at 1313 S. University Ave. and hitting a 61-year-old woman pushing a child in a cart.

Officers said witnesses told them the driver of a Jeep Cherokee hit the woman in the crosswalk but miraculously didn't hit the child in the cart just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“It’s a very unfortunate incident," Officer Brandon Post of the Provo Police Department said. "It shouldn't have happened, but it could've been a whole lot worse."

Provo officers said after hitting the victim, the driver, Carl Anderson, got out of the vehicle to check for damage and then tried to drive away.

However, witnesses held him until police arrived.

“They didn't use any physical force or restrain him," Post said. "They just stopped him from leaving by placing themselves between him and the vehicle or standing in a place so the vehicle couldn't leave, so they acted very appropriate and we're thankful for their actions."

Authorities arrested Anderson for DUI (with serious bodily injury), operating a vehicle without insurance and revoked registration.

Police said the 61-year-old woman went to the hospital with a separated shoulder, severe neck sprain, hip bruising and other minor bruising and scratches.

“Had the pole not stopped his momentum, it didn't appear he was going to stop, so it could've been a whole lot worse,” Post said of the crash.
