Common digestive problems: know the warning signs and when to seek medical help

Digestive problems can range from mild stomach discomfort to intense abdominal pain. Disorders of the digestive tract are quite common, but diagnosing these disorders and finding symptom relief usually takes a trip to the doctor. However, don’t let digestive symptoms continue without getting things checked out.

  • Heartburn/GERD
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Gallstones
  • Diverticulitis
  • Hemorrhoids
What are signs and symptoms that can signify problems of the digestive tract?
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Blood in stool
  • Unintentional weight loss
If you have one or a combination of symptoms, visit your doctor. Although these symptoms do not always signify a serious problem, it is important to get them checked out. Early diagnosis is best for treatment.
Treatment of digestive disorders
Treatment largely depends on the disorder; however, there are lifestyle changes that may improve symptoms.

  • Increased exercise
  • Weight loss (if overweight)
  • Reducing stress
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet
