Loved ones react to new footage from scene of officer-involved shooting in Salt Lake City

Posted

SALT LAKE CITY - Heidi Keilbaugh had spent the afternoon making preparations for a memorial for James Barker. The day, January 8, marked the 1-year anniversary of an altercation between Barker and a police officer that resulted in Barker being shot and killed.

"It looks like James is unconscious on the ground," Keilbaugh said while watching newly-released video of the incident for the first time.

Body cam video from the police officer had previously been released, but new video surfaced Friday. The video, which appears to have been shot by a neighbor, shows Barker lying face down, on the front lawn.

"That's when he was shot," Keilbaugh said out loud while watching the video. The previously released video shows the footage leading up to the shooting, but this new video, she believes, shows what happened after the other camera stopped rolling.

"It made me want to get out there and fight, bring justice back to his name," she adds.

Looking at the video herself, she admits it's difficult to know for sure when the alleged shots were fired, but she said she believes the video will play an important role in clearing Barker of any wrongdoing he allegedly had.

“I’m sure this video is going to be pieced apart, and spread out, I’m sure there’s addition of the video that will be compressed, so we will have those answers in time," she said.
