SALT LAKE CITY -- The blare of sirens surrounded the Utah State Capitol Wednesday night as a stream of law enforcement vehicles escorted the Honor Flag to the memorial for fallen officers in memory of Officer Doug Barney, who was shot and killed by a fleeing fugitive in Holladay Sunday.
In a brief ceremony, Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder accepted the flag, holding it to the wall bearing the names of Utah officers lost in the line of duty. His head bowed, a small group joined Winder in paying their respects.
"I believe we need to support all of our officers, fireman, anybody who serves and gives their life for us, deserves for us to support their loved ones in their time of need," said Lelen Peterson, the mother of a police officer.
The Honor Flag will remain with Officer Barney until his funeral, which is scheduled for January 25.
