MIDVALE, Utah -- A Midvale restaurant was shut down after city building officials discovered construction in the basement making the structure unsafe.
Customers say Los Machetes Mexican restaurant, located on 7718 Main Street, has been closed since late last week.
City officials received a tip from a construction worker who reported construction work happening beneath the restaurant without an application for a permit.
Donald Steffensen with the Midvale City Building Department, said he’s never seen anything quite like what he saw at Los Machetes.
“He [construction worker] called on the phone, I happened to answer it and he said, ‘you know, I don’t feel safe down here, I think there’s working going on without permits,’” Steffensen said.
Officials say the construction exposed the foundation and footings of the building.
FOX 13 News received an anonymous tip to the newsroom late last week claiming rooms were being built for illegal immigrants.
City officials wouldn’t confirm the claim. Steffensen said the construction looked like rooms that were going to be rented at one point in time.
