KEARNS, Utah - Unified and West Valley City Police officers stopped to save an elderly couple trapped in their burning home before attending Officer Doug Barney's funeral Monday.
At about 8 a.m., authorities were called about a house on fire in Kearns near 4400 W. and 5255 S. and said two people could be stuck inside the home.
Unified Police Officer Brandon Sulich, dressed in his full dress uniform and on his way to the funeral for fallen officer Doug Barney, saw the fire and stopped to help.
West Valley City Police Sgt. Trudy Cropper and Officer Scott Folkers also went to the house.
At that time, West Valley City officers were covering shifts in the area so Unified Police officers could go to Officer Barney’s funeral.
The three officers found the home with smoke pouring from the windows and roof.
Officers found the two residents in the lower level of the house.
Unified Officer Sulich helped the elderly man safely out of the house and West Valley Sgt. Cropper and Officer Folker got the woman into a wheelchair and helped her out of the house as well.
