SALT LAKE CITY — A new bill would charge you a fee if you don’t bring a reusable bag when you go shopping.

Senate Bill 196, sponsored by Sen. Jani Iwamoto, D-Salt Lake City, sets a 10 cents per bag fee for people at retail stores. It does not include garbage bags, plastic used to keep food safe, or even smaller bags at small businesses.

The bill states that landfills are filling up and reusable bags are better for the environment. The money generated from the 10 cents-per-bag fee would go toward local governments and Utah’s Department of Environmental Quality.

The bill was introduced Friday in the Utah State Legislature.
