WEST JORDAN, Utah -- A West Jordan woman accused of abandoning her 8-year-old son at a hospital last month spoke with FOX 13 Thursday moments after her first court appearance.

The woman, who asked to be identified only by her first name "Kathy," took the boy to Jordan Valley Medical Center on February 21 and left him there, along with a note that said "This child is rude and ungovernable! I do not want him in my house at all!!" Kathy was charged with child abandonment and child abuse, which could mean up to six years prison time for her if she's convicted.

Kathy, who has three other children, said she thought she was doing the right thing at the time, but now hopes to reconcile with the boy and put the incident behind her.

"I'm already working with DCFS to get some services in and so maybe that it will help ease his, you know, behavior and we can get along better, or whatever," Kathy said.

Kathy has been appointed a legal defender and has agreed to surrender herself to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail to have her fingerprints and photos taken.

Kathy has met with the boy in the presence of a Division of Child & Family Services worker.

She hopes to have some of issues surrounding the February 21 incident resolved before her next court appearance on March 22.
