SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Governor Gary Herbert spoke Thursday about his decision to endorse Texas Senator Ted Cruz for president.

Herbert implied he would have preferred to endorse Ohio Governor John Kasich, but he ultimately decided to endorse Cruz because he has a better chance of winning the GOP nomination.

“I’m a practical Republican. I want to get the best person I can in the Oval Office that has the ability to get elected. The unfortunate truth is the numbers are starting to show that Governor Kasich did not have as good of an opportunity,” Herbert said.

The governor went on to say he believes Cruz’s principles and values are more closely aligned with those of the people of Utah than those of Donald Trump, and that Cruz would make a better president than Trump.
