A family in Charleston, West Virginia is grateful to have their dog back after the canine reportedly spent nearly a week inside of a pipe.
The video above shows the moment “Mater” the 14-year-old Beagle mix was rescued from a pipe. According to the Charleston Gazette-Mail, Mater went missing last Friday and wasn’t spotted again until Thursday, March 31.
“I was giving up hope that he was still alive,” the dog’s owner, Kathy Olson, told the Gazette-Mail.
But some of the woman’s neighbors had been hearing a dog barking for several days. They followed the noise a few times but couldn’t locate the animal until Thursday when they came upon the animal in a storm drain.
“We didn’t know to look down,” Shonnette Mosier, one of the neighbors who looked for the dog, told the Gazette-Mail.
A group of firefighters and utility workers teamed up to saw through the concrete and then the storm pipe in order to free the dog. The Olson family took Mater to a vet to be checked out, and they found that, aside from a heart murmur, the dog is fine.
