SALT LAKE CITY — A man died Tuesday morning after he was hit by car while trying to cross the street in Sugar House.
According to Salt Lake City police, 41-year-old Lester Dewey was trying to cross 1300 E at the I-80 overpass around 7 a.m. Dewey and another man, believed to be his brother, were trying to go from west to east.
It was dark outside at the time, and police said the driver never saw Dewey until it was too late.
"The sad thing here was there are crosswalks close by and lights to regulate these intersections and those weren't utilized. I mean, just a short distance away from where he was struck and killed, there's a crosswalk," said Det. Greg Wilking, SLCPD.
Dewey was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The resulting investigation caused traffic backups on 1300 E and forced officials to close the I-80 exit ramp to 1300 E.
