SALT LAKE CITY — Police say it will be up to a medical examiner to determine the cause of death after a deceased person was found decomposing in some wetlands by Salt Lake City International Airport Saturday.

Salt Lake City Police Department personnel said they were called to the area after a man riding his horse discovered a dead person.

“Our officers responded to a deceased person out near the Duck Club, out by the [Salt Lake City] airport, and they located a deceased individual,” Det. Greg Wilking of the Salt Lake City Police Department said.

Wilking said at this point they have limited information about the deceased.

“There was a certain level of decomposition that was happening, so in terms of who this person is and what the story is: we don’t know,” he said. “At this point we don’t know how they died, and that’s all going to be determined by a medical examiner.”

Wilking said there was nothing immediately suspicious at the scene where the body was found, but because the manner of death is unknown they will be investigating.

He said it could be several weeks before a medical examiner is able to determine the identity of the deceased or the cause of their death.
