Health Dept: 2,899 more COVID-19 cases in Utah; 27 additional deaths

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health's COVID-19 report for Tuesday shows an increase of 2,899 confirmed cases—bringing the state's total to 314,817—and 27 additional deaths.

Wednesday's report also includes 2,289 "backfilled" cases, which are cases that were identified as early as June 2020, but were not previously included in Utah's case counts due to incomplete or unverified address information for the person who tested positive.

Beginning Wednesday, the Utah Department of Health will include cases with incomplete or unverified addresses in its reports unless or until the case can be verified as a non-Utah resident.

So far, 1,855,385 people in Utah have been tested for the disease. The state's rolling seven-day average for the number of positive tests is 2,840 per day, and the seven-day average for the percent of positive tests is 27.8.

A total of 124,884 vaccines have now been administered in Utah.

566 people in Utah are currently hospitalized with COVID-19.

1,449 people in Utah have died of COVID-19. The 27 deaths announced Wednesday are:

"9 of the 27 deaths being reported today occurred prior to Dec. 23, 2020. The Office of the Medical Examiner conducts thorough investigations of all potential COVID-related deaths, these investigations can take several weeks to complete," UDOH noted in its report Wednesday.
