EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah-- A 9-year-old boy is dead after a dirt bike crash in Eagle Mountain Tuesday afternoon.

Utah County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Spencer Cannon said the boy lost control of the dirt bike he was driving, hit a curb and then crashed into a tree.

It happened in a neighborhood near Golden Eagle Road and Mohican Drive. Cori Beagley lives just a few houses away, and heard commotion.

"We could hear some screaming down the street," she said. Cori saw somebody running, so she began to run too. She said it was the young boy's sister who was screaming.

According to witnesses, it appeared they had both been riding separate dirt bikes down the road, when the boy crashed into a tree.

Cori said she could see the dirt bike on the other side of the tree, with his helmet a few feet away. Cori saw that a man had begun doing CPR on the boy.

"I'm a registered nurse, and so I ran up and asked if I could help," she said. "And together we did what we could, until the first responder came."

After Utah County Sheriff's Office deputies and paramedics arrived, there wasn't much more they could do. Sgt. Cannon said they determined the boy had died.

"He was wearing a helmet, and so that appears to have given some protection," Sgt. Cannon said. "But the nature of the injuries, and the way he hit tree was extremely critical."

"If there was something that could have been done, I feel like it was," Cori said.

She explained that they have a lot of kids in the neighborhood. Tuesday evening, kids stood outside asking their parents what happened.

"The kids are definitely talking about it and know that something happened, especially here at the end of our street," Cori said. "We're all heartbroken for the family, and our hearts are with them."

According to Cannon, the boy lived in the area. His name has not been released.
