SALT LAKE CITY — If you're camping this Memorial Day weekend, fire officials ask you to monitor your campfires at all times and make sure the fire is fully extinguished before you leave the fire pit.

Unified Fire Authority spokesman Matthew McFarland recommends keeping fire extinguishers in your home, car, RV and camper.

"We use the PASS acronym. It's pull, aim, squeeze, sweep," McFarland said about operating a fire extinguisher.

On Friday morning, Utah Fire Info shared a message from Smokey Bear about the correct way to build a fire pit:

Step 1: Clear a BIG space. Remove twigs, grass, leaves and firewood from the fire pit area.
Step 2: Dig a pit in the dirt
Step 3: Circle the pit with rocks
Step 4: Build the campfire!
