ROOSEVELT, Utah — ROOSEVELT, Utah — A massive plume of smoke and large flames were reported in Roosevelt early Friday morning and crews worked for hours to contain the blaze.
Officials say they were called to a fire in the building that houses two businesses, Second Time Around, a thrift store, and Marsan's Furniture, a furniture store.
FOX 13 news viewers sent in photos and videos of the fire, which showed multiple fire trucks nearby as smoke billowed from the area.
Cary Leighton saw the fire firsthand and sent in videos of the blaze.
"You could see the flames, like, way higher than anything," said Leighton. "And the smoke was just... wide, and just a ton of black smoke."
Leighton, a lifelong Roosevelt resident, lives about half a mile from where the fire took place.
"Right there in that, like, area that it caught fire, there's like tons of businesses that are all connected," Leighton said. "They all are connected together."
Leighton says she and her family decided to drive down to that area, shortly after 5 a.m.
"We drove on the other side of Main Street to just see it from another angle and I rolled down the window to try to get a picture," she said. "At this point, we were a good distance away from it and it was so hot, you could just feel how hot those flames were burning."
Officials are unsure what started the fire and what damages look like for both businesses impacted.
In addition, they had to shut off power in the area for about an hour due to concerns about electrical lines potentially catching fire.
"I'm just grateful for our volunteer firefighters that were able to contain the fire and help it not affect more businesses," said Leighton.
No injuries were initially reported as a result of the blaze.
"Roosevelt City would like to express our deepest condolences to the business owners who have been affected by this morning’s fire on Lagoon Street," a statement from the city read in part. "This is not just a personal tragedy for the affected business owners, but a loss for our city as a whole."
It's not suspected any foul play is involved, but an investigation is being conducted by the Utah State Fire Marshals Office.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help one of the business owners.
