MORGAN, Utah — In a rare event, a judge will flip a coin or draw names from a hat to pick a winner for a Morgan County Commission race that has ended in a tie.

Election results show that Jared Andersen and Cindy Carter are tied for the seat at 541 votes. Under Utah law, a judge is brought in to flip a coin and determine the winner, said Utah State Courts spokesman Geoffrey Fattah.

The coin toss was to take place Monday evening in the Morgan County Commission chambers. However, the Utah State Courts said it would delay the decision in case either candidate sought a recount.

In November, Shaun Kelly and Cecile-Marie Wallis, who were in a similar situation in the race for a spot on the Brian Head Town Council, also had to use a coin toss, St. George News reports. Kelly won.
