SALT LAKE CITY — Police were investigating Thursday morning after two people were killed when they crashed head-on into a garbage truck in Salt Lake City.

A police spokesperson said a van carrying the two victims was headed northbound near 980 South Redwood Road when it suddenly crossed over the median and into the southbound lanes. Moments later, the van slammed into the Salt Lake City sanitation truck, killing both passengers.

The driver of the garbage truck suffered minor injuries.

"Just out driving their route, didn't do anything wrong, just driving in the southbound lane when this van crossed over and struck the garbage truck," said Det. Michael Ruff. "Looks like they did everything they could to avoid it."

Southbound lanes of Redwood Road remained closed for several hours at Indiana Avenue.
