Utah won't share driver license info with Census to determine citizenship

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's Department of Public Safety said it will not share driver license or ID info with the federal government as part of efforts to determine citizenship in the U.S. Census.

"We are absolutely not in any agreement concerning federal Census access to Utah's driver license records concerning citizenship," Lt. Nick Street said in a statement to FOX 13. "We received their request to enter into an agreement that was sent to all states, and denied it."

The Trump administration has been seeking the information to figure out the citizenship status of every adult in the United States, National Public Radio reported, and four states have been providing the data -- Iowa, Nebraska, South Carolina and South Dakota.

The U.S. Supreme Court blocked an explicit citizenship question on the 2020 Census, but the administration has been gathering other records under an order from U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, NPR reported.

This is not the first time Governor Gary Herbert's cabinet has broken with the Trump administration on issues surrounding immigration and refugees. The governor last year asked President Trump to allow more refugees to settle in Utah as the President sought to keep them out of the United States.
