Homemade French-Fried Onions
Ingredients
2 ½ c. buttermilk
4 c. onions, thinly sliced
3 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. kosher salt
¼ tsp. pepper
4 c. canola or vegetable oil for frying
Directions
1. Soak the onions in the buttermilk for 30 minutes.
2. In a shallow dish, add the flour, salt and pepper, and whisk to combine.
3. Heat the oil in a deep pan until it reaches 375. Use a thermometer to test the temperature for best results or dip the tip of a wooden spoon in. If it bubbles around the edges it is ready to go.
4. Drain the buttermilk from the onions and dredge them in the flour to evenly coat. Shake off any excess flour and place in the oil to fry in batches until golden brown. Remove the onions with a slotted spoon and let them drain on paper towels. Use immediately or let them cool completely and store in an airtight container. Serve on your green bean casserole or they are great on burgers.
