There's nothing like curling up with a good book on crisp fall days.

Melissa Dalton Martinez, host and book reviewer for The Book Break, joined us with three recommendations.

We've all faced a lot of crises this year, and even this week with power outages and windstorms. Melissa's first book recommendation will help you get prepared for natural disasters and more. It's the the newly updated 3rd edition of Crisis Preparedness Handbook by Patricia Spigarelli Aston. Melissa says it's like the encyclopedia of preparedness. It gives you everything you need to prepare for any kind of crisis, big or small. It has checklists, charts, worksheets, and gives you small, easy to digest steps that you can take today to start preparing yourself and loved ones for potential emergencies.

Melissa's second recommendation is The Wish and the Peacock by Wendy S. Swore. This is a wonderful book for school-age children eight years old and up. The main character is Paige, a 12-year-old girl who lives on a farm in Idaho with her little brother, Mom, and Grandpa. She finds out her Mom is going to sell the farm so she and her brother set out to make the farm as undesirable as possible to potential buyers. They have some fun adventures with grasshoppers, spiders, and even a peacock, as they work together to save their family farm.

The third and final book is The Paper Daughters of Chinatown by Heather B. Moore. This is a touching historical novel based on the true story of Donaldina Cameron and other brave women who fought to help Chinese-American women escape discrimination and slavery in the late 19th century in California.
