Living through the pandemic has created a perfect storm for unwanted weight gain.

Spending long hours at home and navigating a highly stressful time in our lives ca promote behaviors that lead to weight gain, according to Sara Browning, RD, registered dietitian at Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

If you are feeling ready to start some proactive behaviors, Browning offers these tips to maintain a healthy weight.

1. Sometimes we eat to distract ourselves from unwanted feelings or to numb difficult feelings. A good strategy is to give yourself a list of nurturing activities that you enjoy such as going for a walk with a good book on tape, doing an Amazon yoga session, or calling a friend to talk through your feelings.

2. Enjoying comfort foods can be done in a healthy way. If you choose to eat a comfort food, take time to consciously choose it, sit down to enjoy it, and pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues.

3. Make food choices that honor your health and that you enjoy. Start taking notice of the healthy foods you enjoy. Over time, you`ll be surprised how the list of healthy foods you enjoy grows and how your body will thank you.
