We're in the thick of the holiday season and it's important to think about holiday safety.

We talked to Personal Injury Attorney Craig Swapp about some major safety risks that occur during the holidays.

One of the biggest issues is an increase in fire related damages or injuries. People are using more electricity with holiday lights, lighting their fireplaces, and using candles.

A major issue is Christmas trees catching fire. People forget to water the live trees. A dried out tree is just a tinderbox that needs only one spark to cause major problems.

Swapp always reminded us to be aware of kitchen fires and burns. There tend to be a lot of people who gather in the kitchen during the holidays, so make sure pans are out of reach of children and that someone is in charge of keeping an eye on the cooking food.

Finally, remember be mindful of road conditions if you are traveling. Check your tires to make sure they have good treat and it's also a good idea to have an emergency kit in your vehicle. Stock it with the obvious essentials: a blanket, a flashlight, a first aid kit and a bag of sand or cat litter in case you get stuck.
