What you need to know before renting a scooter

There's a new form of transportation these days and you can access it with just a phone app and a credit card: rentable electric scooters. But how safe are they?

If you've spent anytime downtown recently you'll see these rentable electric scooters from the companies Lime and Bird. Anytime you've got a transportation platform where anyone can hop on and drive them around, there are some inherent dangers.

Personal Injury Attorney, Craig Swapp, tells us that it's actual illegal to ride or use them on sidewalks in Utah. They are designed to be ridden like bicycles, on city streets, but in Salt Lake City people frequently use them on sidewalks, posing risk to themselves and pedestrians.

He also tells us there have also been a few instances where the scooter's battery has overheated and caught fire, and injured the rider.
