The Utah State Forester has issued a seasonal ban on target shooting that goes into effect the afternoon of July 12, 2012 at 4:00 pm.
The ban makes illegal the discharge of a firearm for target practice from the east side city limits to where it connects with the Wasatch Cache National Forest, or unincorporated county areas. Deputies will patrol these areas and will educate the public, and issue warnings the first week the ban is in place.
After the first week, they will begin issuing citations for violations of the ban.
The ban does not include the gun ranges within Davis County, where it will still be legal to shoot.
Sheriff Todd Richardson has worked with the Wahsatch Shooter’s Club Gun Range in Fruit Heights to allow the public to target shoot there free of charge. He is also working with the Lyon’s Club Gun Range in Bountiful, to allow free access to the public for target shooting during the ban, although that is still in the works.
Sheriff Richardson said, “I want the public to have the ability to target shoot, but I have concerns about the safety of the residents on our east benches with the fire danger this season. With the gun ranges allowing free shooting to the public, it is a good compromise.”
The ban will stay in effect throughout the fire season.
