WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- FedEx expects Monday to be the busiest shipping day of the year and in its history.

"Typical day, we usually process about nine million shipments throughout our system. [Monday}, we are more than double that, about 19 million shipments will go outbound through our system tonight," said Sherman Hadley, FedEx operation manager in West Valley City.

That's up from 2011 when they shipped 17.2 million and 2010 when FedEx handled more than 15 million packages. It is almost twice the number sent in 2005.

Many of the shipments are the result of the strong online sales. Cyber Monday sales hit close to 1.5 billion dollars this year, a record day for e-commerce.

UPS and the U.S. Post Office are also working overtime to keep up with demand. December 17 is expected to be the post office's busiest day with 655 million pieces of mail, while UPS expects December 20 to be its high volume day with 28 million deliveries

If you haven't shipped your Christmas gifts, there's still time to get them under the tree.

According to the post office, if you want your domestic cards and packages to get there by Christmas day, first class mail needs to be sent out by December 20th. For priority service, the last date is December 21st and express mail is December 22nd.
