MIDVALE, Utah — Midvale Elementary School and Midvale Middle School were placed on lockdown Thursday morning as a Unified Police SWAT team responded to a nearby home.
Unifed Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said detectives went to a home at 7873 S Oak St. to speak with 25-year-old Morgan Winger about his suspected involvement in a vehicle burglary and other warrants.
A family member invited the detectives into the home, and Winger barricaded himself in a bedroom, refusing to come out, Hoyal said. The SWAT team negotiated with Winger until he agreed to come out.
The backyard of the home borders the schools’ shared campus. Hoyal said the lockdown was a precautionary measure and the students were not at risk. The lockdowns were lifted by noon.
Canyons School District representative Jennifer Toomer-Cooke said the district placed automatic phone calls to the parents and legal guardians of the students at the two schools to notify them of the situation.
Parents and legal guardians were asked not to pick up their students.
