WEST VALLEY CITY -- Three people are in custody after they allegedly carried out a drive-by shooting with a shotgun near a West Valley home and then fled from police pursuit.

The incident began near 3400 South and 4000 West on Thursday shortly before midnight.

Police were in the area when the shots were fired. Officers saw the suspects fleeing in a red SUV, which is when the chase began. Police said the driver of the vehicle began driving toward an I-215 on-ramp but surrendered before making it there. There were three people in the car, all of whom were taken into custody.

Lt. Matt Elson, West Valley City Police, said one of the suspects attempted to discard the evidence of the shooting as the suspects fled.

“During the pursuit the occupants of the car that we were chasing threw a firearm out the window,” he said. “That firearm has since been recovered."

Luis Rivera and Benjamin Venegas were each booked into jail on one felony count of attempted homicide, according to a police report from the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. In addition, Venegas was booked with a misdemeanor drug paraphernalia charge.
