PIUTE COUNTY, Utah – A 37-year-old man drowned in Otter Creek Reservoir Wednesday after he jumped into the water to help his teenage son.

Authorities said a family was boating on the reservoir at about 4 p.m. when a gust of wind blew some items out of the boat and into the water.

A 13-year-old boy jumped into the water to retrieve the items and got into trouble and couldn’t return to the boat. The man jumped into the water with a life jacket to attempt to rescue the teen. The father was able push the boy back toward the boat before the father vanished under water.

Family members pulled the boy onto the boat, but they could not find the man. Search and rescue crews recovered the man’s body at around 8:30 p.m. Authorities said neither the boy nor the father were wearing life jackets.

We will have more information as it becomes available.
