FLAMING GORGE – A man died after diving from high cliffs in the Big Firehole Canyon Area of Flaming Gorge Saturday.
Sweetwater County Sheriff Rich Haskell said 24-year-old Michale Pond of Rock Springs, Wyoming, was with friends in the area Saturday.
The man’s friends told investigators they drove to some cliffs, and they said Pond decided he wanted to jump from the cliffs into the water. They said they tried to talk him out of it, but he jumped anyway.
Pond’s friends said he jumped, hit the water and never came up again. Searchers recovered Pond’s body from the water, which was about 40 feet deep, on Saturday afternoon.
