RSL scores late to tie Philadelphia

Posted

SANDY, Utah — Javier Morales scored on a penalty kick late in stoppage time to give Real Salt Lake a 2-2 tie against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.

RSL went down a goal when Sebastien Le Toux scored to put Philadelphia up 1-0 in the 13th minute. Then RSL went down a man in the second half after Lovel Palmer was sent off with a straight red card in the 59th minute.

RSL battled back to tie it up when Luis Gil headed home a corner kick from Javier Morales in the 75th minute. But just seconds later, with RSL fans still celebrating Gil’s goal, Conor Casey scored to put Philadelphia back on top 2-1.

RSL got a break late in stoppage time, when Philadelphia was called for a hand ball inside the 18-yard box. That set up the penalty kick for Morales. It hit the post and went in to end the match in a dramatic 2-2 tie.

RSL now has a league-leading 34 points with a 10-5-and-4 record.
