(CNN) — If your job was to sit in on committees and hearings all day, you might get a little bored sometimes too… even if the hearing is on a heavy topic like Syria.

Senator John McCain was caught red-handed playing poker on his iPhone during Tuesday’s Senate Committee hearing on whether the US should launch a military strike on Syria. A Washington Post photographer snapped a picture and posted it online.

McCain offered an explanation to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, “As much as I like to always listen in rapt attention constantly with remarks of my colleagues over a three-and-a-half hour period, occasionally I get a little bored (laughs) and so I resorted. But the worst thing about it is I lost thousands of dollars in this game. I lost thousands of dollars. Well, you know, it was a poker game and you know you play with play money, you know in the game.”

Just to be clear, McCain repeated again that it was thousands of dollars in fake money.

Right after the Washington Post put up the picture, McCain came clean in a tweet: “scandal! caught playing iphone game at 3+ hour senate hearing – worst of all i lost!”
