RIO TINTO STADIUM — For the third time in franchise history, Real Salt Lake failed to win a title in front of their home crowd with an ending score of 0-1. The latest disappointing defeated came against DC United in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
DC United scored just before the half on a goal from Lewis Neal, and that goal held up as the game-winner.
RSL was the dominate team, controlling possession and taking 19 shots, but they could never find the back of the net.
DC United came into the match as a heavy underdog after winning just three Major League Soccer matches this season, but they pulled off the upset to win the 2013 U.S. Open Cup.
