Man facing attempted murder charge, victim in critical condition

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Police arrested a man on attempted murder charges after a victim with severe head injuries was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Officers responded to an apartment complex near 468 S. 75 West in Cedar City after hearing about an assault in progress Wednesday around 8 a.m.

According to a press release from the Cedar City Police Department, officers encountered 30-year-old Brandon Thomas Sappington, who advanced on officers and refused to comply with verbal orders.

Officers could see blood on Sappington’s hands before the suspect put his hands in his pocket, and after he refused to take his hands out Sappington was arrested.

During Sappington’s detainment, he tried to head butt and kick officers, according to the press release.

Police located an adult male victim on the sidewalk near where they encountered Sappington. The victim suffered serious injuries, including a laceration to his head. The victim was taken to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City, and then he was taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas in critical condition.

Sappington was booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility on charges of attempted murder, assault on a police officer, interference with arrest and a misdemeanor traffic warrant.

Attempted murder is a second-degree felony. The name of the victim has not been released.
