WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A federal fugitive was arrested Friday night after leading police on a short vehicle pursuit, officials said Saturday.
A West Valley Police sergeant spotted a stolen vehicle at approximately 8:10 p.m. in the area of 4800 S. 500 West. When the sergeant attempted to pull the car over, the motorist sped off, said West Valley Police Sgt. Trudy Cropper.
The chase was terminated near TRAX at 4500 S. 100 West after the suspect, Jerry Joseph Romero, crashed through lowered guard arms, Cropper said. Romero, 37, then reportedly crashed into a parked vehicle and fled on foot.
A perimeter was set up and Romero was found near the northbound off-ramp of 4500 South.
Kent Stokes of the West Valley City Police Department said the man was wanted on a federal warrant for guns.
“He has an extensive criminal history,” Stokes said. “He’s currently wanted on an ATF federal firearms warrant. So he’s a fugitive from the ATF, and he has a class A misdemeanor as well for fleeing. So he is known by our metro gang unit as well as surrounding agencies as a career criminal.”
