BORDENTOWN TWP., N.J. – A New Jersey school district is pulling three Christian-based songs from its December elementary concert.
A message to written Thursday by the superintendent of Bordentown Regional School District said parents raised concerns about the appropriateness and legality of the songs, which focused on the birth of Jesus.
Solicitors reviewed the matter and recommended the songs be omitted, citing a 2008 court ruling.
The district complied with the recommendation and said it would work on a formal policy.
“Issues like this are highly emotional and open our community to a much broader, national dialogue about freedoms and rights,” Superintendent Constance J. Bauer wrote on the district’s website. “Our goal as a district is to be inclusive and non-offensive, yet we want to respect all religions and traditions. We ask that you grant us patience as we work through this issue, keeping in mind that our focus needs to be first on the education and safety of our students.”
