WEST VALLEY CITY — Ron Bigelow trumped Karen Lang in the open seat for the West Valley City mayor Tuesday night.

Unofficial numbers reported Bigelow garnered 4,406 votes while Lang, a city councilwoman, acquired 2,832 votes. There 25 write-in votes.

Bigelow will replace Mayor Mike Winder, who chose not to seek re-election.

Bigelow has served in the state legislature for 16 years. He said he had no real need to be mayor but felt people in West Valley City weren’t stepping up and addressing the problems in the community.

“I felt that West Valley City was at a point where they were just getting worse and worse,” he said. “We needed to address it in a strong and professional way.”

Bigelow’s first order of business will be to meet with the city manager and new police chief and talk about what they’re doing, what’s transpiring in the city and what’s happened in the past.

Lang said she was disappointed that she lost but believes Bigelow will do a good job and will be easy to work with on the city council.
