SALT LAKE CITY — The 60-foot tree chosen for the Gateway Mall’s Christmas Tree has left its Cottonwood Heights home for good.

Known as Big Piney, drivers started their route on Fort Union Boulevard. Not roads will be closed as the tree is brought to the mall.

Fox 13’s Kelly Chapman will be on scene to watch the tree mounted in the fountain area of the outdoor mall.

The tree is expected to arrive at 4:30 p.m.

The cutting ceremony for this year’s tree took place Tuesday morning. The tree was donated to The Gateway by Cheryl Smith and her family.

The Smith’s said 33 years ago, Big Piney stood about 6 feet tall. Now, at about 60 feet tall, the tree has outgrown its Cottonwood Heights home.

Big Piney is The Gateway’s biggest Christmas tree to date.
