SAN DIEGO – BYU looked like they were going to coast to an easy win. Instead they had to battle for a victory and earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round by at the West Coast Conference tournament.
The Cougars led by as many as 15 points in the first half at San Diego on Saturday, but the Toreros made a furious second half charge to take the lead, twice.
But Tyler Haws broke out of a scoring slump to lead all scores with 25 and push the Cougars to a 78-70 win. Matt Carlino added 14 points off the bench while Anson Winder and Kyle Collinsworth both reached double digits.
San Francisco also won their season finale, but by virtue of a season sweep over the Dons, BYU earns the second seed at the WCC tournament in Las Vegas later this week.
