The civilian who was one of two men killed in a shooting on the USS Mahan at Virginia’s Naval Station Norfolk on Monday night had proper identification to get onto the base, but breached security to board the ship, a U.S. defense official said Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official also offered these details of the shooting: It began after the civilian, having breached security to board the ship, grabbed the service pistol of a sailor who was standing guard. The civilian then shot a different sailor who was on security duty, and security personnel shot the civilian, the official said.
