UTAH COUNTY — One person is dead and another person was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after a car that was reportedly driving erratically hit a semitrailer parked alongside I-15 early Thursday morning.

Sgt. Todd Royce of the Utah Highway Patrol said the accident occurred after 1 a.m. near the Point of the Mountain just after the vehicle crossed the county line into Utah County.

Royce said they had received reports of a 1999 Nissan Altima that was driving erratically prior to crashing into the semitrailer.

“We had some reports of some erratic driving by this driver of this vehicle, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked semi that was off on the right side of the road, subsequently rolled, one passenger was ejected and pronounced dead on the scene,” he said.

Another individual was taken to a hospital with injuries that officials said were serious but were not life-threatening. The male driver of the semitrailer was not injured.

Another individual may have been in the Altima, possibly driving the vehicle. Royce said they are investigating to determine whether an individual did flee the scene or if one of the two victims mentioned above was driving the Altima.

The accident remains under investigation and officials said they are looking at all possible factors. Royce said alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in the crash.

Royce said they encourage people to report people driving erratically.

“Whenever you see somebody that’s on the road that’s erratic driving, that has a hard time staying in their lane, please feel free to give us a call,” he said. “There’s a lot of impaired drivers that are taken off the road because people will call and report them, and we appreciate that.”
