Cyclist injured in collision with car may face DUI charge

SALT LAKE CITY – Police say a woman who was injured after a car and a bike collided in Salt Lake City is likely to face charges for driving under the influence.

Police said a woman was driving down State Street just after midnight when a cyclist with no lights, no helmet and no reflectors pulled out in front of her near Washington Square.

Lt. John Cameron, Salt Lake City Police Department, described the impact.

“She slammed on her brakes but ran into the back of the bike, and the lady on the bike landed on the windshield and then fell on the ground,” he said.

The cyclist was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries officials described as being not life-threatening.

Police said the cyclist may be charged with DUI, as she appeared to be intoxicated while riding. The laws relating to driving under the influence apply to cyclists when they share the road with motorists.
