PORTLAND, Ore. – An Oregon man is suing Costco for $670,000 after he claims he was injured when he refused to show his receipt to workers at the door.
According to The Oregonian, Timothy Walls filed a lawsuit, claiming he suffered a broken leg when he was detained by store employees.
Walls claims he purchased $102 worth of items at Costco when he was stopped by an employee at the exit.
The lawsuit alleges the employee grabbed his cart and told him he could not leave.
Walls refused to show his receipt, saying he didn’t believe they had the right to detain him.
However, Costco’s policy states, “To ensure that all members are correctly charged for the merchandise purchased, all receipts and merchandise will be inspected as you leave the warehouse.”
When the man wouldn’t let go of the shopping cart, Walls grabbed him by the collar and pulled him away.
The suit claims that’s when another employee used “a martial arts-type strike with his leg.”
Walls is asking for $150,000 for past and future medical expenses, $20,000 for lost wages and $500,000 for pain and suffering.
