SALT LAKE CITY -- A walk scheduled for Saturday will raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer, and one of the event organizers has a very personal stake in that fight.
The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will be held at Liberty Park, 600 West 900 South, Saturday morning.
Registration is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m.
Morgan Marietti works for the American Cancer Society and is in charge of the event. Her mother, Diane, is a 15-year breast cancer survivor.
She said she believes early detection, a mastectomy, and eight weeks of chemotherapy--along with family support--saved her life.
“They said it would increase my chances by 10 percent, 15 percent--and I was all for whatever percent it was, I was ready... and I’m so glad I did that,” Diane Marietti said.
Fifteen years later, mother and daughter are happy to celebrate another year of life and share their important message: One in eight people will get breast cancer , but, with early detection, the survival rate is well above 90 percent.
FOX 13 News is a sponsor of the event, and Hope Woodside will be the MC. Click here to visit the American Cancer Society's website for more information about Saturday's event.
