SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah -- A woman is in critical condition after she was shot in South Salt Lake Friday morning.

The shooting occurred shortly before 7 a.m. outside an LDS church near 300 E 3300 S.

Police said the shooting victim, a 42-year-old South Salt Lake resident, collapsed after crawling about half a block looking for help.

"She told officers she was walking down the street very near the church, in front of the church, heard what sounded like four gunshots and then felt something hit her leg," said Gary Keller, South Salt Lake Police Department.

The victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.

Keller said Friday morning that officers don't know who has responsible for the shooting, but they hope to find evidence like shell casings that might lead them to a suspect.

Police closed 300 E near 3300 S to investigate  the shooting. The street has since reopened.
