SALT LAKE CITY -- A man who was found in the middle of a street with a gunshot wound to his chest was pronounced dead at a hospital Saturday night, and while details regarding the incident are scarce, police said they are treating the area as a crime scene.

Reports of the shooting came in around 7 p.m. Saturday, and officials said it occurred in the area of 1140 East Parkway Ave. in Salt Lake City. Parkway Avenue is closed for about a block in the area of the shooting.

Police on the scene tell FOX 13 News that no witnesses have reported hearing shots, but a person driving in the area saw the man in the street and called authorities after realizing he was seriously injured. A handgun was found near the man, and a blood trail indicates the man may have moved or may have been moved to the street after suffering the gunshot wound. Police brought in a K9 unit to track the blood in order to determine where the man came from. They said the blood trail goes for about two blocks but said the origin is not clear.

Lt. Rich Brede, Salt Lake City Police Department, said details about what happened are unclear at this point.

“We don’t know who to look for, we’re trying to determine the scene, and if we determine that it was self-inflicted then obviously we wouldn’t be looking for anyone, but right now we don’t have a person that we’re looking for," he said.

Officials said they are not sure how or why the man was shot, but they said at this point they are treating it as a crime scene. FOX 13 News will have more information as it becomes available.
