WICKLIFFE, Ohio- An 11-year-old girl is being held on murder charges in the beating death of a 2-month-old girl, according to a report from FOX 8 in Cleveland.
The incident occurred at an apartment early Friday morning while the infant was with the babysitter.
Wickliffe Police Chief Randy Ice said after the 11-year-old’s mother fell asleep at about 3 a.m., she took 2-month-old Zuri Whitehead to a different room.
It was at that point the 11-year-old girl beat the infant, according to a FOX 8 report. The young suspect was holding Zuri when she returned to her mother.
The 2-month-old suffered a massive brain injury. The child was taken to Lake West Hospital then to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, where she died during surgery.
Ice said this case has been extremely difficult given the young ages of the victim and suspect.
The 11-year-old appeared in court on Monday and is being held without bond.
FOX 8 reports the girl will undergo mental evaluations at the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center. According to Ice, police were called to her school twice for incidents in the past.
At this point, the mother of the 11-year-old will not be charged. Ice said the 11-year-old’s mother is friends with the mother of the baby.
