Man jailed for alleged sexual abuse of young girl over 14-month span

SALT LAKE CITY – A man has been booked into jail and faces multiple counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, and the victim was 8 or 9 years old at the time of the alleged abuse.

According to a statement of probable cause from the Unified Police Department, 35-year-old Scott Joshua Devey of Salt Lake City allegedly sexually abused a young girl between July 19, 2013 and September 15, 2014. Devey was arrested Tuesday night at his apartment and booked into the Salt Lake Metro Jail.

The document lists three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and three counts of sexual abuse of a child, and it states the victim told police the man had touched her genitals both over and under her clothing and then moved his finger to penetrate her. He also allegedly touched her breasts and buttocks with his hands and kissed her with his tongue, according to the statement of probable cause.

The victim stated the abuse had occurred numerous times, and the document states the suspect told the young girl on the first occasion that she was not allowed to tell her parents what was happening. The alleged abuse occurred over the course of more than a year, and the victim was 8 or 9 at the time.

Devey’s bail is set at $75,000, according to court documents.
