VERNAL, Utah – A toddler is in critical condition after he was found alone in a hot tub Tuesday night.

The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called about a possible drowning at a Vernal home near 4000 S. and 1500 W. at about 7: 30 p.m.

Deputies said the family started CPR on the 16-month-old boy and emergency crews rushed him to the hospital.

He was later flown to a Salt Lake hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities said a family member had partially removed the hot tub’s cover to check the water and at some point stepped away.

When relatives noticed the toddler wasn’t in the house, they immediately checked the tub and found the boy unresponsive in the water.

Officials said they believe the boy was in the water a short period of time when relatives found him.

Deputies are investigating but said this appears to be an accident.
