ESCALANTE, Utah – A pilot and his passenger are recovering after their helicopter crashed in Escalante Sunday.
According to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, a St. George man and his 14-year-old son were taken to local hospitals after the four-cylinder, piston-driven helicopter crashed about nine miles up Main Canyon, just west of Escalante.
Officials said the pilot had trouble turning the helicopter when a gust of wind hit it and forced the tail to hit the ground and crash.
The pilot, whose name has not been released, was rushed to Garfield Memorial Hospital and was later flown to Dixie Regional Hospital in St. George.
His son was treated for minor injuries and released.
